Purchase Many Gift Cards at 25% Off

A few days ago I wrote about a great Amex Offers promotion where you can purchase a $100 at Staples.com with your registered American Express card and get a $25 statement credit. The best thing about this offer is that Staples carries MANY gift cards for other merchants which will trigger the statement credit. So ultimately, you can purchase a $100 gift card for another store and get a 25% savings!

Staples.com carries both physical and egift cards (both which will trigger the statement credit), but the physical gift cards that are delivered to you in the mail come with a $1.99 fee per card. The egift cards are absolutely free.

So here is a list of all the gift cards you can purchase at Staples.com. Some are available as an eGift card and physical gift card, and in those cases I listed it only in the eGift card list since you do not need to pay a fee.

You can also purchase a $100 Visa gift card with a $6.95. While this is a heftier fee than other gift cards, you will still come ahead and can use a Visa gift card at almost any merchant. For example, I have access to 9 eligible Amex credit cards, so if I go the Visa route I could purchase $900 in gift cards for $962.55 and receive a statement credit amongst my accounts for $225, thus bringing my total cost down to $737.55. If I were to purchase eGift cards with no fee, my total cost would come out to be $675! If I were to purchase physical gift cards with a $1.99 fee, my total cost would come out to $692.91.

Remember, you can take advantage of this promotion with every targeted American Express credit card. You will need to sign into your AmericanExpress.com account to see which cards are eligible for the promotion. If there are multiple cards eligible, make sure to open a separate web browser for each card PRIOR to saving the offer to your card. This prior post discusses the steps to do this. Make sure to do this soon though as enrollment is limited and I recently got burned on the Hyatt Place Amex Offer!

There is a good chance I’ll be purchasing the no-fee Home Depot or Lowe’s gift card, but for those looking to save on travel Southwest Airlines is always a good option. What gift card did you purchase?

  1. so even though the T&C of the offer specifically excludes gift cards you still get the statement credit?
    Please post your results.

  2. I still haven’t read yet where anyone has had the credit posted. I am registered but don’t want to even attempt until I see someone actually comment that the credit was posted. Yes they have said they received the “thank you for using your registered card” message…but no one has said they got the credit posted.

Normally I would try it and just get a gift card I would normally use, but I am not in the middle of any spends I need to make! So I shall wait!

  3. again, you failed to mention one thing. no one has reported success in getting the 25$ on the staples deal. I am not talking about email confirm, i mean actual credit. It may post but not yet!

  4. i can’t believe these lame comments about risk.. its only $100 on you get the $100 gift card anyway.. its not like you would even lose anything for trying

  5. I got the $25 staples.com credit posted, but I ordered 2 cases of paper (with the $44/per case rebate pending). Not sure I want to chance it with buying gc.

  6. I purchased a $100 Visa gift card but did not receive the $25 credit. I posted this fact on the Deals We Like Facebook page. Why do they continue to publicize the eGift cards when no one is getting the credit?

  7. I can report success in purchasing a merchant e-gift card from Staples online and receiving the $25 credit. It took three days for the credit to post following the gift card charge appearing in my AMEX account at the beginning of this week.

  8. Ok since Charles stated he had success I just went ahead and ordered on online gift card for Lowes…and some boxes of tissue they had on sale I will be pick up. So my total was $103.99. Hopefully I will get the credit. I can always use the $100 at Lowes in case it doesn’t work out. So no loss and worth the attempt

  9. Jennifer, do you have confirmation that this deal works? Thank you for responding and also THANK YOU for all your hard work!

    • @AHC – Many readers have commented that the deal works. I just ordered my gift card yesterday so it hasn’t yet posted, but I will be sure to let you know when it does!

  10. Thank you Jennifer. Looking forward to your response. Fresh Market grocery store is also one of my AMEX offers available. Would you happen to know of any good deals through this market? Thank you once again.
