While not travel related, this is a great deal for those that like to shop at Bloomingdales! To get this savings you must: 1) use the Friends & Family code, 2) shop online and go through an online shopping portal, and 3) purchase a discounted gift card through a cash back site.

Bloomingdales Friends and FamilyStep 1: Purchase a discounted gift card at one of these three sites:,, or The major caveat is that you must purchase an eGift card to be able to use it before the Friends & Family sale ends. eGift cards are sent within 1 business day, while physical gift cards are sent in the mail and usually take 3-7 business days. At the time of writing this post the highest discount for an eGift card is 4% at Prior to purchasing, I suggest going to to see the best offer at the given time. Gift cards seem to be selling out quickly. Also, if you purchase your gift card at or through the cash back site you’ll get another 2% cash back.

Step 2: Go through an online shopping portal prior to going directly to the website. ShopDiscover and are offering 10% cash back. In the case you’d prefer to earn points or miles with your purchase, Chase Ultimate Rewards is offering 4 points per dollar spent and American Airlines is offering 6 points per dollar spent – I personally would opt for the 10% cash back. Going through the shopping portal will literally take one extra minute and ultimately put you directly on the Bloomingdales website.

Step 3: Add the items to your shopping card. At checkout include promotion code “FRIENDS“. This is available to anyone and everyone and will give you 25% off your entire purchase (keep in mind that you’ll only get 20% off a selection of fine jewelry, 15% off a selection of small electrics, and some of the higher end super expensive stuff is excluded). Also, Bloomingdales has waived the shipping fees when you use the code, so free shipping for all!

So how does this calculate to 37% off? Let me first preface this with it is not a perfect science and I’ll point out some of the caveat’s along the way! Let’s say you want to purchase a $100 item, here are your savings:

  • The Friends & Family discount of 25% will bring this order down to $75
  • Gift card purchase will save you 4%, bringing the cost down to $72.00
  • You received 2% cash back on the $75 gift card purchased, saving you $1.50 and bringing the cost down to $70.50
  • You also received 10% cash back on the $75 purchase by going through the ShopDiscover or shopping portal, saving you $7.50 and bringing the cost down to $63. This means for a $100 item you are only paying $63! This is a 37% discount!

As I mentioned before this is not a perfect science. If you go through a points or miles earning shopping portal, it depends on how you value your points and miles. Also, this is assuming a perfect opportunity to purchase a $75 gift card. You might end up with a balance on your gift card depending on the cards available. I believe you can only use 5 gift cards per online transaction. There is also the risk that the higher discounted gift cards will sell out. If you want to skip the gift card component all together, you are still getting 32.5% off the lowest selling price online which is still awesome! The 10% cash back with TopCashBack is a two day promotion that expires March 26. My assumption is that it will go back down to 6% which is still a good offer.

Needless to say, this can be a great discount for many! The Bloomingdales Friends and Family promotion goes until March 29, 2015. Enjoy!
