Just after last weeks news of changes coming to the The Platinum Card® from American Express, we are now informed that there will be changes to the The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN. While the personal card “enhancements” were a positive for some and a negative for others, the business version changes are only positive. All changes for both cards will take place March 30, 2017. These enhancements to the business version of the Amex Platinum include:
Earn 5x points on airfare and hotels
You will now earn 5x points when purchasing airfare and prepaid hotel rooms at Amextravel.com. While this is great for those that book through the 3rd party travel sites, I personally would never recommend booking hotels through them. When you book a hotel through them you typically are not able to take advantage of any discounts offered through the hotel directly and benefits of having status go out the window.
Last year, the Amex Platinum personal version added the opportunity to earn 5x points on airfare when you book directly through the airline, but you did not have to book through Amextravel.com (although you still can and earn the 5x points as well), which is much better. Last week they also added on the same increase in bonus to booking hotels directly through the Amextravel.com. So if you are looking to earn 5x points on airfare, the personal version of the card will be much better you.
With that being said, I still would NOT use an American Express card to book airfare. American Express does not have the same travel benefits as many other credit cards. For example, if you book a flight with most Chase credit cards, you’ll receive baggage delay reimbursement, trip delay reimbursement, trip cancellation insurance, etc. Booking with your Amex Platinum card will NOT give you those same benefits, which is huge in my opinion.
Enhanced Priority Pass membership
Your Priority Pass Select membership will now allow you to bring 2 guests into the lounge for free.
While these enhancements are not ground breaking or a reason to apply or keep the card, in my opinion, it is nice to see positive add-ons to a card. Unlike the Amex Platinum personal card, this card will not incur a annual fare increase (phew!).
