I am a relatively new Sam’s Club shopper. When living in NYC, Costco was the only “convenient” option, but now that I am in the Boston suburbs, I have my pick of wholesale clubs! Last summer I got a free Sam’s Club Membership through an Amex Offer deal, and have been frequenting the store quite often. The big leg up Sam’s Club has on the other wholesale clubs is their relatively new “Scan & Go” app, which has saved me both time and money.

How the Scan & Go App Works…

First off, you can download the free Scan & Go app for both Android and iPhones. You’ll then have to set up the app with your Sam’s Club information. From the store, you simply use the app to scan the products UPC codes that you add to your shopping cart. From the app, you can even see your total as every item is added to your cart. If you are not currently a Sam’s Club member, you can see their current offer here.

When your shopping is complete, there is no waiting in line at a checkout counter. While you are still in the store, you simply pay from your phone. The receipt will appear on the app which you show to the Sam’s Club associate when leaving the store (as you normally would do with a paper receipt).

Saving Money!

The best thing about the app is that it shows you the price immediately when you scan the item. When I was shopping at the store last month right after Easter, there were a ton of items on clearance, but not actually marked. I randomly picked up easter colored ravioli knowing my daughter would love them, and after seeing the actual price of $2.97 (75% off), I picked up 8 more packages! While I would have ultimately seen the clearance price during checkout, it saved me time from having to run back into the store to buy more.

Additionally, since you receive your receipt on the phone, you can easily scan it in to other money saving apps, like Ibotta, to receive cash back. I’ve written about Ibotta in the past, but essentially it is an app that allows you to receive cash back on certain products at participating grocery stores (such as Sam’s Club).

Keep in mind that Sam’s Club accepts Discover card as a form of payment (unlike Costco), so you can take advantage of Discover Card’s 5% cash back bonus for Q2.

Overall…

Typically my grocery shopping is done with one or two kids in tow, and being able to skip a line is HUGE! Not having to worry about a meltdown while standing in line drastically lowers the anxiety level! Additionally, my daughter loves scanning the items at the store, so it gives her something to do. And fortunately, deleting scanned items that you do not really want is easy to do as well.
