Back in March I wrote about a great partnership between the IHG hotel program and Fuel Rewards. Fuel Rewards is Shell Gas Stations loyalty program and with this partnership IHG Rewards Club members (at any level) can save money every time they fill their gas tank. With this program, you can earn Fuel Reward points to redeem for free gas.
The savings will depend on your status with IHG:
- 5 cents per gallon everyday savings for Club and Gold Elite members
- 6 cents per gallon everyday savings for Platinum Elite members (the IHG credit card gives you automatic Platinum status!)
- 7 cents per gallon everyday savings for Spire Elite
Just by having an IHG loyalty number will give you automatic Club status. While Club status will get you pretty much nothing at an IHG hotel, it will give you 5 cents off every gallon of gas you put into your car! Or, if you have the IHG credit card (which every single person should have!), you’ll save 6 cents per gallon since credit card members receive instant Platinum status.
To save at the pump, you’ll need to first link your IHG account to the Fuel Rewards program. If you are not already a Fuel Rewards number you can create an account during the process or create an account first here through a referral link.
For those that typically fill up at a Shell station, this is a great way to save some extra money. I personally think Shell stations are slightly more expensive then some other gas stations, but they are sometimes the most convenient for me. While I’ve never used this program before, the sign up process took me about 30 seconds and it seems quite easy. For those that have big tanks, your savings are limited to 20 gallons of fuel per purchase per vehicle.Â
All you do is swipe your Fuel Rewards card or enter your ID (which is your phone number). You can then pay with any credit card you want! You can even pay with a Shell gift card – they are available at Office Supply stores where you can earn 5x points when using many credit cards as well!

Buy gas gift cards on sale on ebay and you’ll save a lot more than a ridiculous 5-6 c per gallon
@Mister M – You can purchase Shell gift cards for sale on ebay and still use them in combo with saving 5-6cents per gallon.
That is a great combination! I’ve been using the fuel rewards card and discounted gift cards for a year now. I don’t think I’ve paid any more than $1.75 for a gallon of gas in almost a year.
Not sure where you live at $1.75 gallon. Costco significantly cheaper than Shell making this deal not worth much.
Where are the discounted gas cards listed on Ebay? I looked on their site and everything I saw is listed at the face value of the gift card; there was no discount to be found. Thanks.
