The Iceland based low-cost carrier, WOW Air, is expanding their service big time. In 2018, WOW Air will start flying from 5 new cities throughout the US, including: Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE), Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) and St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). This is a nice inexpensive way for those that live throughout the mid-west to get to Iceland or other cities throughout Europe with a connection in Iceland. Other cities they fly to/from within the US include: Chicago, Boston, Baltimore, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, and Pittsburgh.

Flights from DTW, CLE, CVG and STL to Iceland will commence in 2018. The inaugural flights are as follows:

  • Detroit on April 26
  • Cleveland on May 4
  • Cincinnati will be May 10
  • St. Louis on May 17

I personally flew WOW Air from Boston to Reykjavik, Iceland two years ago pretty soon after they launched in the US and just flew to Boston and Baltimore. I personally had a great experience and would absolutely fly them again. While they do charge extra for checked bags, carry on luggage, and seat assignment, if you pack light and do not care where you sit for the short flight you could get away without paying anything extra. Even if you do need to pay some extra, the cheap fare usually (although not aways!) makes up for it! You can read my review here.

  1. I hope WOW will consider Dallas Love Field (DAL) for their next route expansion. Southwest flies to DAL from a variety of cities, and could serve as a feeder for WOW’s trans-Atlantic routes.
