Starting today, all stays at Hyatt hotels using points for a free night will count towards status! While I wrote about two positive changes to the World of Hyatt program last week, I wanted to highlight this particular enhancement as it goes into effect now!

Back in March 2017, Hyatt really did a number on the Hyatt program, including changing the number of nights and stays needed to earn status. They did away with being able to earn status solely on stays and increased the number of nights needed. While you can also earn status on base points earned, this requires you to spend a pretty penny at Hyatt hotels – something I am sure most of us do not do! After this change, earning status was quite hard.

  • Discoverist: 10 qualifying nights (or 25,000 base points)
  • Explorist: 30 qualifying nights (or 50,000 base points)
  • Globalist: 60 qualifying nights (or 100,000 base points)

With all stays here on forward though, if you are staying for free by using your points, those nights will count! This is huge for those that have a healthy Hyatt balance and prefer to use points for a free night stay. I already have 11 nights book using points for two different Hyatt vacation which will get me that much closer to earning Explorist status for the year. I also anticipate Hyatt having some promotion this year for Hyatt card holders that will fast track you to status, although that is just speculation.

Hopefully this will help a few of us earn status a little easier!

If I am currently in a stay. Do I get credit? I’m sure I can call them and have it apply. But I’m curious to see if it happens automatically maybe for the whole stay including nights from last year?
