Last week I received a very unexpected email from Starwood – I earned Gold status! It is less then a month into 2018 and I have yet to step foot in a Starwood hotel so I knew there was some error. I signed into my Starwood account and noticed the error. With both the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express and Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express you receive 2 stays and 5 nights towards status. I have both those cards so every year receive 4 stays and 10 nights towards status. On January 9, January 23, and January 24, Starwood posted those 2 stays/5 nights to my account for both my cards! While it was clearly an error that they posted this 3 times to my account, it did give me 12 stays and 30 nights! Since you need 25 nights to earn status, that triggered my account to achieve Gold status! a pool with lounge chairs and umbrellasThis was an error for many Starwood accounts, although it seems like some folks had the 2 stays/5 nights post twice and others three times. And like me, many folks received that very generous Gold status email!

I knew it was only time before Starwood retracted the extra stays/nights and I assumed I’d lose my Gold status as well. I just checked my account and saw that those extra stays/nights were in fact taken away. And now my account only shows that first posting date. I checked my husbands account and his account also shows the correct information as well.a screenshot of a web pageTo my surprise though, my account still shows Gold status! No idea though if Starwood will eventually take it away (which I would absolutely understand), but if not, thank you Starwood for the delayed holiday gift! And to top it off I was then able to match my Gold Starwood status to Marriott Gold. Since my husband has Starwood (and Marriott) Platinum I haven’t had a need to chase Starwood status, but always love having status tied to my account!

Were you “upgraded” to Gold?

You make me sick it’s as if you want it taken away, so you post about it.
