Today is the big day where Southwest has extended their reservation system allowing you to now book flights through January 6, 2019. Up until this point you were only able to book through November 3, 2018. ! If you are are a planner and know that you’ll be taking a flight during this time, I suggest looking into flights TODAY. The reason for this is that peak flight times (typically starting December 20th for the holiday time and the week of Thanksgiving) will most likely be the cheapest you’ll see them today. There is a slim chance they will go down in price as the weeks get closer, although you never know.

I’ve already been able  to secure a bunch of flights utilizing my points, which is great. I personally love the flexibility of Southwest because I can cancel my vacation plans with NO PENALTY! I can also continue to watch the prices of the flight and IF they go down in price I can get the difference in points back! You can read more about the exact process and steps to go about this with these two blog posts: “Changing and Canceling a Southwest Flight” and “If a Southwest Flight Goes Down in Price….” Keep in mind though, earlier this year Southwest changed their rules where if you “change” a flight it makes a fully refundable fare turn into a non-refundable, so remember to always cancel and rebook. If you need to change or cancel a flight, here’s the process. if you…

  • Paid for the flight… You will receive a voucher for the difference in fare price to be used one year from the date the flight was originally purchased (NOT the date the change process took place). This voucher is non-transferable. The voucher will be tied to the confirmation number of the original flight. There is NO fee for this.
  • Booked your flight using points… The points will go back to your account immediately. Again, there is NO fee for this. This is why I love booking Southwest flights using points!

If you are looking to make a flight post January 6 2019, it looks like they’ll be opening up their reservation system on June 28th and it will allow you to book through March 6, 2019.

Where are you looking to book?!
