Today is the big day where Southwest has extended their reservation system allowing you to now book flights through March 6, 2019. Up until this point you were only able to book through January 6, 2019. This means you can now book flights for MLK Weekend, Presidents Day Weekend, and February beak! If you try to plan your vacations around kids school schedule and know you’ll be taking a flight during this time, I suggest looking into flights TODAY. The reason for this is that peak flight times, such as the start and end of February vacation (for those of you who have a Feb vacation) today might be the best prices you’ll see.
I’ve already been able to secure a bunch of flights utilizing my points, which is great. I personally love the flexibility of Southwest because I can cancel my vacation plans with NO PENALTY! I can also continue to watch the prices of the flight and IF they go down in price I can get the difference in points back! You can read more about the exact process and steps to go about this with these two blog posts:
You can read more about the exact process and steps to go about this with these blog posts: “Changing and Canceling a Southwest Flight”, “If a Southwest Flight Goes Down in Price….”, and “Seeing if a Southwest Flight Went Down in Price is Now a Lot Easier“. Keep in mind though, earlier this year Southwest changed their rules where if you “change” a flight it makes a fully refundable fare, non-refundable, so you might want to cancel and then rebook. You can learn more about this new rule here. But essentially if you…
- Paid for the flight… You will receive a voucher for the difference in fare price to be used one year from the date the flight was originally purchased (NOT the date the change process took place). This voucher is non-transferable. The voucher will be tied to the confirmation number of the original flight. There is NO fee for this.
- Booked your flight using points… The difference in points will go back into your account immediately. Although, you might want to cancel and rebook. Again, there is NO fee for this. This is why I love booking Southwest flights using points!
If you are looking to make a flight post March 6, it looks like they’ll be opening up their reservation system on April 16 and it will allow you to book through April 5, 2019.
Where are you looking to book?!
