Having Just 1 Amex Membership Reward Card Can Save you a Boatload at Amazon

One of my favorite promotions that pop ups quite often are the American Express Membership Reward / Amazon partnership offers. When these promotions appear, all you have to do is apply 1 Membership Reward point to your Amazon order and it will give you an automatic discount off your purchase. Every time the promotion appears, a different savings amount is tied to it, but in just the past year, I’ve seen anywhere between $25 to $100 off every single time!

I looked through my old blog posts and was able to find 4 different times that this offer was available in just the past year. Back in July we saw an offer for 20% off, up to a $100 savings and we could take advantage of it two times! In March and November there were two different $30 off promotions, and last August there was a $25 off promotion. I took advantage of these offers every single time saving me $285 in just one year! And there might have even been more that I missed. Of course sometimes the offers are targeted, but most of these seemed to be widely available and between both mine and my husbands Amazons account, at least one of us were targeted. And some we were able to even take advantage of on both accounts, like that one just last month, saving us even more money!

The best thing about these promotions is that any American Express Membership Reward earning card will give you access to the discount, it doesn’t have to be a card that comes with an annual fee – no annual fee cards give you the exact same savings! I personally have The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express tied to my Amazon account which is great since that is a no annual fee card.

The absolute best thing about these promotions is that you do not actually even need to buy items from Amazon. If you prefer a gift card to another merchant, Amazon sells those too and the discount will still apply! Last month there was even a glitch in the system that would allow you to apply the discount to Amazon gift card purchases, although that is not the norm. So even if you do not have an Amazon purchase to make at the time when the promotion appears, you can still take advantage by purchasing gift cards to a slew of other merchants – such as Whole Foods, Nordstrom, Gap, Lord & Taylor, Lowe’s, Panera Bread, Starbucks, Outback Steakhouse, etc.

Remember, this is only for American Express Membership Reward earning credit cards, NOT co-branded American Express cards (such as Hilton Amex, Starwood Amex, Delta Amex, etc.). Here’s a list of the cards that are eligible when the next offer pops up (you can learn more about the cards and welcome offers here):

American Express Membership Rewards Cards with No Annual Fee

  • The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express
  • The Blue Business®Plus Credit Card from American Express

American Express Membership Rewards Cards with Annual Fees (although some might waive the annual fee for the first year if you are a new member):

  • The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express
  • Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express
  • American Express Business Gold Card
  • The Business Platinum® Card from American Express

Personally, my favorite American Express card is the The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express since it still earns FULL American Express Membership Reward points which means you can transfer them to partner airlines – typically how you can get the best value for your points. You can learn more about this card here.
