Most hotel chains have some sort of “best rate guarantee” policy where they promise to have the lowest price available. They allow you to submit a claim if you do in fact find a less expensive rate and if it is approved they will either beat the rate, throw you some bonus points or give you money — the policy depends on the actual chain. With that being said, getting approved for a best rate guarantee claim is typically challenging. Everything has to match to the tee, including taxes, cancelation policy, room type, etc. The department who is in charge of actually approving claims will many times find some reason to deny you and then by the time you fight them on it the rate you found elsewhere is gone!

Fortunately though, it looks like Hyatt is gone ahead and actually improved your opportunity to get approved. Typically, chain hotels, including Hyatt, will immediately deny your claim if it requires you to be a member of a hotel site (even if it is a free site). There have been many times in the past where these member-only sites have the best price available, although you’ve never been able to actually be matched to that rate. From here on forward, however, if there is a free membership site where you find a lower rate, Hyatt will in fact match the price (assuming everything else matches). There used to be a site called Travel Pony (no longer in existence) which many times had less expensive pricing, but since you had to great a username/log-in, those claims were always denied, despite being free. If that site was still around today, it would be the perfect place to receive your best rate guarantee match.

Now, if you do get approved for a best rate guarantee, you have two options to pick from:

  • 20% off the room rate that is being matched or
  • 5,000 World of Hyatt bonus points

Previously you received a $50 credit, so these two new options are significantly better. Depending how you value your World of Hyatt points depends on which option you should pick. For cheap rooms, the 5k bonus option is a great deal!

If you do happen to find a less expensive room, you can submit your findings here.
