UPDATE: This offer has expired.

American Express recently upped their sign up offer for the The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN.  This offer will give you 50,000 Membership Reward points after you spend $5,000 in purchases on the Card within your first 3 months of Card Membership. For awhile now, this card has offered a steady 25,000 bonus points, so I am glad to see a double offer for those interested in this card! This card still comes with a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $175.

This card earns American Express Membership Rewards points which is a top favorite currency of mine. I like programs that offer you flexibility, since these points can be transferred multiple airline partners, such as Delta, Singapore Airlines, KLM/Air France, ANA, British Airways, Aeroplan. With that being said, if you like using your points at hotels, the transfer ratios to their partner hotel programs are not favorable and I would not suggest earning these points if that is what you desire.

Earning points with this card

You will earn 3x points on one category of your choice. The five included categories include:

  • Airfare purchased directly from airlines
  • U.S. purchases for advertising in select media
  • U.S. purchases at gas stations
  • U.S. purchases for shipping
  • U.S. computer hardware, software, and cloud computing purchases made directly from select providers

You will then earn 2x points on the remaining 4 categories. On all other purchases you’ll then earn 1x points. The 3x and 2x points only apply to the first $100,000 in eligible purchases in each category per calendar year, and then 1x point apply per dollar spent thereafter.

Other card benefits

The other benefit of this card (along with all OPEN credit cards) is the discount you’ll receive at some popular merchants. My personal favorites are 10% at Office Max, 10% at Hertz, 5% at FedEx, 5% at 1-800-FLOWERS, and 5% at Barnes & Nobles.

And since this is an American Express credit card, you can earn a ton of statement credits by taking advantage of the Amex Offers deals that I write about quite often. This can help you actually make money by having the card or at least help you offset some of the cost of the annual fee.

Is this the best offer ever?

Previously, this card has had a 25,000 point bonus offer for quite some years now. That has been the publicly available offer, although there are times where folks might receive a targeted offer giving a higher amount. There is no telling though if/when you’ll be targeted. If you aren’t in a rush for this card, you can always hold off and see if a better offer comes by at another point. Since American Express will only give you the sign up offer once in a lifetime per card, you do want to ensure that you sign up during the best offer or at least during a time when you are in need of the points and benefits of the card. With all of that said, 50,000 points is historically a good offer for this card.
