American Airlines Just Upped Their Purchase Miles Bonus

While American Airlines has been offering a nice promo on purchasing miles through the beginning of the month, they are upping the bonus with a special Black Friday offer. You’ll not get an additional 20% bonus through November 27, 2017. If you go all in, you can purchase 270,000 miles which will cost you $4,786.88. This means you are ultimately purchasing their miles at about 1.77 cents per mile. While I wouldn’t suggest speculatively purchasing miles at this price, if you are looking to book an upcoming trip I suggest doing the math to see if purchasing miles is actually cheaper. Many times this can work out well for business or first class, or if you are looking to top off an award.

Some things to know:

  • Your account must have been active for at least 30 days
  • You are capped at purchasing 150,000 miles per calendar year
  • The transaction will show on your credit card statement as “airfare” so if you have a credit card that earns bonus points/miles on this category you’ll receive that bonus

Will you be purchasing points?
