The three low cost carriers Southwest, JetBlue, and Frontier all announced fare sales today to kick off the New Year. If you have a flight you are looking to book, I highly suggest checking out these sites to see if there are any good deals. Remember, Southwest fares do not show up on third-party booking sites, i.e., Kayak.

Southwest $73 Flights

Southwest is offering fares as low as $73 for flights booked through January 21, 2016. This if for travel within the US January 19 through may 25, 2016, travel to/from Puerto Rico from January 19 through March 2, 2016 and March 29 through May 25, 2016, and international travel January 19 through March 3 and March 29 through May 25, 2016.

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 2.43.05 PMIf you already have a Southwest flight booked for a flight that decreased in price, you can get back the difference with no change fees. You can read more about the exact process and steps to go about this with these two blog posts: “Changing and Canceling a Southwest Flight” and “If a Southwest Flight Goes Down in Price…” But essentially if you…

  • Paid for the flight… You will receive a voucher for the difference in fare price to be used one year from the date the flight was originally purchased (NOT the date the change process took place). This voucher is non-transferable. The voucher will be tied to the confirmation number of the original flight. There is NO fee for this.
  • Booked your flight using points… The difference in points will go back into your account immediately. Again, there is NO fee for this. This is why I love booking Southwest flights using points!

My favorite thing about Southwest is if you have points, you can speculatively book flights and if you need to cancel there are no fees at all! The points just go right back into the account they were booked from.

JetBlue $34 Sale

JetBlue is having a two day sale with flights starting at $34 one way. This is for travel January 13 through April 13, 2016. While the terms state that this sale is only valid for Tuesday and Wednesday travel, I see many destinations where most days of the week are actually on sale! This sale lasts for two days until until tomorrow night, January 6, 2016.

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 2.42.54 PMRemember, you have 24 hours to cancel a flight after it is booked for a full refund if you want to “book now and figure it out later.” If your plans are flexible, use the JetBlue Fare Finder which will give you the cheapest price for every day of the month. And if you already booked a flight where the price went down, you have 14 days days to get a credit voucher for the price difference – you’ll just need to call JetBlue.

Frontier $19 Sale

Frontier is offering fares starting at $19 one-way for Discount Den Members. Routes and dates with this incredible low price are spotty, but if you have flexible travel, you might be able to find a great flight! These are for flights booked by end of day tomorrow, January 6, 2016 for travel January 12 through February 9, 2016 and April 5 through April 13, 2016.

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 2.43.14 PMDiscount Den Membership is a yearly paid membership service which gives you plus 6 additional people on your itinerary access to the lowest fares for an entire 12 months. This service costs $49.99 a year and might be worth it depending on if you fly Frontier a good amount. You can check out more about this membership here. If you have a flight you are looking to book today for multiple passengers it could pay for itself in just this one reservation.
