Delta Offering 75% and 100% Bonus on Purchased Miles

UPDATE: This offer has expired.

Delta is currently offering two bonus promotions for purchased miles:

1. Delta American Express Credit Card Members: UPDATE: This offer has expired. If you hold the Delta SkyMiles Credit Card, you can get  a 100% bonus on all purchased miles through December 31. With this promotion, you must purchase the miles in increments of 2,000 points. The minimum amount to purchase is 2,000, while the maximum amount is 60,000 per account. Now with this promotion, each point will cost $0.0175. If you are lucky enough to snag a low level award to Europe for 60,000 points round-trip, this will cost $1,050 – still quite expensive in my opinion and unfortunately difficult to get. I wrote more about the pros/cons of this card last week.

2. Non-Delta American Express Credit Card Members (i.e., EVERYONE!): Through December 22, you can get up to a 75% bonus on all purchased miles. The maximum number of bonus miles you can earn is 45,000 miles.

Overall, it is worth doing a cost analysis of your trip to see if purchasing miles will save you money. The cost to purchase miles is $0.035/mile, plus plus a 7.5% Federal Excise Tax.

If you were thinking of purchasing miles already, then this is great, but in most cases can still be extremely costly. The best value to purchase points is for international business/first class redemption. With Delta inflating the number of points needed to redeem, I am skeptical of purchasing Delta points without an immediate redemption opportunity in mind.

  1. Buy 60,000 miles = 30,000 bonus costs $2,100USD…not worth it. DELTA — YO! Make it worthwhile!

Will stick with *A mileage sales.

    • @Brain – I agree that it probably is not the best promotion for most, but there are some who will definitely make it to their benefit!

    • @Amanda – Really?! That is interesting to hear. And did you use your Delta AMEX to try to purchase the points or would it not even allow you to get that far?

  2. Can I buy miles with their 75% bonus promo and then transfer them using their 100% bonus promo?

I dont have a Delta miles account yet, so I would have to act fast. In the TC it states the following: “have earned at least one automatically posted mile since enrolling” What does this mean?

    • @Jonas – Yes, you can take advantage of both offers, but your account must be open at least 10 days before you can purchase or transfer. This means – open your account now!!

The terms do state that you mist have at least one mile in the account. I am not sure how strict delta is with that but you can get delta miles quickly by Amex transfers or hotel transfers ( not a good value).
