Earn Delta SkyMiles with Marriott Gift Card Purchases

UPDATE: While this promotion looked decent at first, it really is not the best opportunity out there for maximizing your points and miles earning potential. Please refer to this updated post to fully get the best bang for your buck!

Between June 3 and September 2, purchase a Marriott Gift Card and earn Delta bonus miles. The more you buy, the more miles you’ll earn.

  • 500 Delta SkyMiles with a $250 Marriott Gift Card purchase
  • 1,000 Delta SkyMiles with a $500 Marriott Gift Card purchase
  • 2,000 Delta SkyMiles with a $1,000 Marriott Gift Card purchase

You are able to earn a maximum of 10,000 bonus Delta SkyMiles with this promotion. If you have a lot of upcoming Marriott spend, this is an easy way to earn some extra miles along the way. The only reason this would not be a good idea is if you have a Marriott credit card where you get 3 or 5 points per dollar spent at Marriott properties. Purchasing the gift cards will only net you 1 point per dollar. There will be a maximum opportunity loss of 10,000 Marriott points (if you have the non-Premier credit card – silver) or 20,000 Marriott points (if you have the Premier credit card – black). Or if you use a credit card which gives you double miles on all hotel spend (i.e., Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card) it will be a loss of 5,000 points for that particular program, assuming you purchase the maximum amount of $5,000.

I value 10,000 Delta points much higher than 10,000 Marriott points. However, 10,000 Delta points vs. 20,000 Marriott points could be a close call, I’d personally select the Marriott points. Also, if you are using the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, I’d value 5,000 points over 10,000 Delta points since those Ultimate Reward points are extremely valuable.

The huge flaw of this promotion is that shipping costs $8.25 per order. From the way I read it, if you order 3 $250 or 1 $250 gift card in one order you are still only getting the 500 bonus once, not three times. The only way to really maximize this is to place separate orders for the $1,000 dollar amount, but keep in mind that you’ll be paying the $8.25 multiple times.

So while this is not the best promotion out there by any means, this could provide some value for some, or those who were already looking into purchasing a gift card (maybe a graduation gift, wedding gift, etc.). There are other cards available that will allow you to fully maximize with your Marriott purchases - related blog post.

Thanks, I didn’t know about this one. There is a much better deal for people with the Ink Bold: go through the Ultimate Rewards Mall to Staples.com and buy Marriott gift cards there. There is no fee. You get 2 points per dollar from the Ultimate Rewards Mall and 5 points per dollar from the Ink Bold for it’s Office Supplies category bonus.
