UPDATE: This offer has expired.

Southwest just came out with a credit card offer that really highlights my favorite 4-letter world in the english dictionary — F-R-E-E! Right now, all three of their personal co-branded credit cards are allowing you to earn the Southwest Companion Pass right off the bat, this includes the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card, Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card, and the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card. Typically you need to earn 110,000 points in a calendar year to earn the pass, but right now, just one credit card sign up will give it to you, which is pretty amazing! All you need to do is meet the minimum spend requirement of $4,000 and the pass is yours. The offer will also give you an additional 30,000 Southwest Rapid Reward points which you can also put towards free travel. For those not aware of the Southwest Companion Pass, think of it as a 2-for-1 travel opportunity on all of your Southwest fights for the entire year!

What Exactly is the Southwest Companion Pass?

Once you earn the pass, a friend or family member will be able to fly with you for FREE an UNLIMITED number of times. With this offer, you’ll earn the pass through December 31, 2019 which means you’ll have around 11 months (if you act fast) to fly 2-for-1. This also means you must fly by this date, not simply just book by this date. With the Southwest Companion Pass, there are no black out dates or seat restrictions — if there is a seat available for purchase, it is available for your companion. The companion pass can even be used if points were redeemed for a free flight for the holder of the pass. This can result in both passengers flying for free (plus the taxes per passenger). The 30,000 points you earn from the sign up bonus are worth around $450.

Unlike some other companion passes in the travel world, there is no limit to the number of times the pass can be used. Your friend or family member can theoretically fly with you for free every single day in 2019 if you so desire! Just keep in mind though that the pass can only be switched up to three times per year. Since you need to allocate your companion when getting the pass, this allows 4 people to use the pass per year (those people can be repeated and put back on as the companion as well but counts as one of your allowed changes). You can easily change by calling Southwest Customer Service.

Flying for free thanks to the Southwest Companion Pass!

My Experience with the Southwest Companion Pass

I’ve had the Southwest Airlines Companion Pass for 11 years now. Over the years the pass has been used by my husband, my daughter, my son, my mom, and even some friends. My family has literally saved thousands and thousands of dollars throughout the year. We’ve used the pass on domestic flights to destinations such as Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Detroit, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Jacksonville, Birmingham, Washington DC, Denver, Utah, and international destinations such as the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Aruba, and Cancun. Ultimately, someone in my family is always flying with me for free when we fly Southwest Airlines, which is quite often!

Southwest is also my favorite airline since they allow you to cancel and change flights for no fee (both revenue and point reservations), they allow you to check two bags for free, and they have family boarding which guarantees my family can sit together. With Southwest’s flexible policies on top of a free flight, Southwest is by far my go-to airline for many flights!
