Getting the Southwest Companion Pass is Now a Little Harder

Chase just implemented a new rule with their co-branded Southwest credit cards that is definitely not going to make people happy. Currently there are two personal versions and one business version of the card. In the past, one could open up two personal cards (the Premier and Plus) at the same time, earn the bonus points, and be pretty close to earning the amazing Southwest Companion Pass. A new change is unfortunately going to make it that much harder…

Going forward, Chase will no longer allow you to open a new personal Southwest credit card if you are currently a cardmember for the other card. That means if you currently have the Premier card, you cannot open up the Plus card, and vice versa. So applying for two cards at the same time to earn the Southwest Companion Pass will not be possible.

There is still a workaround though as there is still the business version of the card and if you qualify for this card you can still open up one of the personal versions and the business version. Remember, you do not actually need to have a business to open up a business credit card. Many people have been successful opening up a card by saying they are starting an online store selling stuff (i.e., Etsy, eBay, etc.), or that they are getting into real estate, or they are starting an online blog! Of course it is easier to get approved if you have an existing business, but it is always worth a try.

I’ve also heard through the rumor mill of a new more prestigious Southwest credit card appearing in the new future. Hopefully that card will not hold the same rule and everyone will be eligible to apply!
