Welcome to another post of helping a reader travel! As I’ve mentioned before, I have not been to every destination (unfortunately), but do get questions from friends and other blog readers on all sort of travel destination questions. Thus far, we’ve been able to help other readers travel to MauiThe Greek IslandsThe Pacific Coast HighwayArgentinaCosta Rica, Cape Code & The IslandsIceland, GenevaCanadian RockiesRomeIsrael, Peru, and Las Vegas.

So this weeks travel destination includes Stockholm. I received the following email from reader Lou:

“I am planning a trip to Stockholm next Summer and could really use some help figuring out where to stay and things to do. I’ve been to Europe a few times, but never Scandinavia. If possible, I have Starwood points that I’d love to use. Thanks!”

I actually was in Stockholm over Labor Day 2009 (before starting this blog so I unfortunately do not have a trip review). I absolutely loved the city! This was part of a larger trip that included Copenhagen and London as well. We lucked out with beautiful weather (low 80’s) and no rain so that really helped since it can get quite cold there. Since you are going in the Summer though, you should be fine with weather, but a light jacket is probably recommended. We stayed at the Sheraton Stockholm hotel and the location is perfect. Probably one of the best locations in the city. It is a category 5 hotel, so only 12,000 points a night, which is great! There are also a bunch of Radisson Blu properties that I remember seeing in good locations. From what I remember the hotel was nice and the club lounge (if you have status) was decent. I do remember the rooms being small, but large enough that we were able to fit a rollaway in with our two queen beds. Food in Stockholm (and all over Scandinavia) is ridiculously expensive, so having access to the club lounge was really nice. We even ate dinner there one night. We only had two (or maybe three) full days, so we didn’t leave the city limits, but I’ve heard the countryside is really nice. We bought a two day pass to take the boat to the different islands right off of the city. The Vasa Museum is definitely a highlight and I recommend just walking around the other islands. It is a beautiful city, so I recommend spending time walking around to the various parks and through the shopping area. Also, make sure to take the Arlanda Express train from the airport to the city. It is very quick and much cheaper than a taxi. The hotel is walking distance from the train which is great. I really loved Stockholm (and Copenhagen for that matter) and would love to visit other cities in Scandinavia as well!

If you’ve been to Stockholm, let’s help out reader Lou by commenting below. Also, if you have any upcoming travel where you need some help, feel free to email me at dealswelike@gmail.com to be a featured “Help a Reader Travel” Monday special. Thanks!

If you’re a fan of museums, I’d highly recommend the “Stockholm Card.” It’s on the expensive side, but unlike in some other cities, you really to get a great value out of it. If I recall correctly, the main art museum probably covers 50% of the cost, and there are *lots* of other museums worth seeing. The only caution is to make sure that the museums are open on the days you’re visiting– otherwise you’ll end up losing on the deal.

The Sheraton Stockholm was a great value, as has been mentioned. I was fortunate enough to get it on Cash and Points in May 2011 when it was still a Category 4 ($60 + 4000 points).

If you’re in the area, it might be worth taking a run over to Helsinki. It’s a short, inexpensive flight, and there is a fabulous Starwood property there (Hotel Kamp) that is supposedly the classiest hotel in the country. It was a category 5 when I visited and it was ripe with Cash & Points availability. Have fun!!

Scandic Hotel Sergels Torg is another great hotel that comes with full breakfast.

Go to Gamla Stan (old town) , Vasa museum is a must as well as Djurgarden. Check out Skansen a nice park showing how Sweden used to be

Also Groba Lund is a nice amusement park close by ferry

Eat lunch at Ahlens or NK up in their cafeteria or get a kebab at one of the many places there

For something unique get a tunnbrodsrulle – a hot dog with mashed potatoes wrapped in a thin bread thing – very unique!

I was there last year for a weekend. I stayed at the Mornington hotel- it was reasonably priced, very central and had great breakfasts! I also loved the Vasa museum. I took an airport bus which was fine.

I stayed at the Hilton in Stockholm and liked it so much that I canceled my stay at the Radisson Blu The Strand
The hotel has the new wing located in the Executive Club building.I like the older building which boasts Scandinavian Dux beds(only two single beds available in this room type) and saunas in the all marble bathrooms and small walk out balconies. The showers are great here and the views from the hotel excellent.
Diamond and Gold members have access to one of the best buffet breakfasts in Europe.Or Club lounge with a very limited but nice selction. All team members were friendly
however concierge skills really lacked as there is no one trained to the job.Not a big problem when you do your research in advance
With many rates at under 200 dollars US a night this hotel represents outstanding quality and value and Hilton isnt my preferred hotel chain.
They also have an excellent health club by most hotel standards worldwide.Enjoy Stockholm its a beautiful city and fun to walk with helpful friendly folks who speak great English typically
Cheers
