Call me old school, or maybe just the opposite, I don’t really know. What I do know is that when I stay at a hotel, I don’t want a key. I’m talking about a real key like the one you probably use for your home. When I’m at a hotel, just give me one of those credit card things to swipe or slide in the door.

Recently, I was on a work trip and one of the only available SPG hotels I could grab for a reasonable amount was the Hotel Americano in NYC. If you have not heard of or stayed here, no biggie, I wrote a brief review of it last week.

Now, the room itself was not my style (more on that in the review), but what really threw me off the whole time was having this damn key in my pocket. And then, when I got in the room, there was this slot in the wall where I had to put the paper weight keychain part of it in, maybe to keep the lights/outlets working (I don’t really know).

a lock and key in a lockerAnd then, apparently at this hotel you are supposed to leave the key with the front desk when you leave? What’s that all about? My co-worker laughed at me as I complained about the key when we were walking to our meeting. Somehow she knew that it was supposed to stay at the front desk and did so with hers. I guess I missed the memo.

At the end of the day, I want a card, not a key, a card. One that I can swipe, fits in my wallet, is easy tuck into my gym shorts if I go for a run, and one that I can carry with me at all times and even just drop in the trash when I’ve realized I still have it after my trip. Unless I’m at an AirBnB or house rental, don’t bother me with another metal key.

Ok that’s my rant. Check out my review of this hotel, if you haven’t yet, now that you know how I feel about the key.

Your blogs would be best unwritten. Completely annoying. All of them.

the reason the key is so big and bulky is so you want to leave it at the front desk when you leave and don’t take it and lose it. This was the custom before card keys came along. I also prefer card keys over metal keys, in fact, but I really prefer no keys at all. I use a garage door opener or keypad at my house, and look forward to the day when hotel and car keys will become integrated into phones.

We were in interlaken Switzerland and had a 1 pound metal bell attached to the key that we had to take with us because the front desk closed down at 9 pm and the door was locked.
