A few weeks back, IHG just released a status match and status challenge promotion where you can potentially match up to their top tier Spire status. While IHG status (for all three levels) is by no mans as valuable as some of the other chains programs, checking into a hotel room with some status is definitely better than no status at all. Fortunately, this opportunity has been extended with your last day to request the match being July 26, 2019.

With this promotion, you can match to Gold, Platinum or Spire status and keep that status for 90 days. Within that 90 days you then can keep the status until December 31, 2020 if you stay a certain number of nights:

  • Spire Elite status = 10 nights
  • Platinum Elite status = 5 nights
  • Gold Elite status = 2 nights

If you do not stay the number of nights for the status you were matched for, you can still earn a lower tier status if you meet that status threshold. Or, the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card will give you Platinum Elite status just for being a cardmember. Related: 6 Reasons You Want the IHG Premier Rewards Credit Card.

Since I have World of Hyatt Globalist and Marriott Bonvoy Titanium status (both top tier status), I filled out the form for the status match in the hopes of receiving Spire Elite status. The only problem with the Spire status match is that it is limited to the first 2,500 people. I submitted my form on June 19th and within about 10 days my account was updated to Spire status! I am not sure if that 2,500 person threshold has been met yet though.

Unfortunately, the only real benefit to having Spire status over my current Platinum status is that there is a higher chance my family will be upgraded to a larger room in future stays. Other than that, there really is no real benefit. With the status match you do not receive most of the other benefits of earning status the hard way, although I will receive complimentary Hertz Five Star status through the end of the year.

Overall…

If you are looking to match to IHG Spire status you’ll want to act fast. As I mentioned above, there is no way of knowing whether or not that number has been met yet, but there is no harm in trying. Otherwise, you can still match to Gold or Platinum status with no cap on the number of accounts they’ll match. I do think the threshold to maintain your status for another year and a half is extremely generous and pretty easy to earn if you make staying at IHG properties a priority.

While I probably will not maintain my IHG status, I am happy my Spire status match came through.
