After many many years, Southwest is finally starting service to and from Atlanta, Georgia. With the acquisition of AirTran it was expected, but just a matter of time.

Starting February 12, 2012, passengers will be able to fly to/from Atlanta via BWI, Chicago Midway, Denver, Austin, and Houston Hobby. While right now there probably are not as many direct flight as passengers would like to see, I speculate as time goes on additional flights will be added enhancing the flight routes.

Additionally, even with a layover, there currently are no options from Atlanta to a decent amount of cities, including the entire state of Florida. The map below indicates all flight options.

Since Southwest is currently booking out till March 9, 2012, you have a three week window to book any flights to and from Atlanta.

This information was just announced within the past 30 minutes or so. As additional information is released regarding future plans with AirTran and enhanced flight options, I will be sure to let you know.

I am sure all the Atlanta folks out there are pretty excited!

As an Atlanta folk we are not excited at all since AirTran will eventually be no more. I hate that AirTran is gone. In 2010 I had almost 60 flights with them. In 2011 I’m at 0

I hate to see AirTran go as well and I live in Birmingham. I would often go to ATL to fly AirTran over SouthWest out of Birmingham. (They were so much cheaper! Plus cheap biz class seats!)

I’m happy to see SouthWest enter the market because they travel to cities that I love that Airtan doesn’t. I do agree that the biz class seats are a great deal. I would like to see the merged airline take the best qualities of each airline and keep them with the new. But that might be a pipe dream…..

I can’t believe that with this merger there will be no flights from Atlanta to Florida. What will happen to all the AirTran flights to Florida? Come on Southwest! Correct this!

@Mark – I am hoping once the merger is finalized we will see a huge enhancement with Southwest destinations. Keeping my fingers crossed.
