UPDATE: This offer has expired.
A few months ago, Southwest upped their credit card offer for all four of their co-branded cards to allow you to earn 60,000 bonus points! This includes three personal cards, Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card, Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card, Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card and and one business card, Southwest Rapid Rewards Business Premier Credit Card. Unfortunately though, it was just announced that this increased offer is ending in just one week on January 9, 2019. If you’ve been meaning to apply for this card, now is the time to do so!
Typically, these cards offer anywhere between 25,000-50,000 points, so seeing a 60,000 point offer is awesome! While I am not loving the high spend threshold to earn the maximum number of points on the three personal cards, it is absolutely obtainable since you have an entire year! Southwest Airlines is by far my families airline of choice. I love their no fee policy when changing and canceling flights, I love that I do not have to worry about bag fees, I love that I can speculatively book flights with points, and I mostly love that a family member can fly with me for free ALWAYS since I have the Southwest Companion Pass.
The BEST THING about these offers are that the points earned from the credit card sign up currently count towards the 110,000 point required for the Southwest Companion Pass. And right now is the perfect time to apply to get the Companion Pass for 2019 and 2020!
For those new to the Southwest Companion Pass, I want to quickly point out that this pass allows another passenger to fly with you for FREE an UNLIMITED number of times! This means that if you get two of these credit cards, you’ll immediately earn the companion pass after the points from the sign up offer post to your account. Points post to your account a few days after your statement closes after you meet the minimum spend. You just want to make sure you hit the minimum spend prior to your December 2019 statement closing for all points to count towards this year. If you earn the 110,000 points required in 2019, that will earn you the Companion Pass for for 2019 and 2020! It is in your best interest to earn the companion pass as quickly as possible since the pass is valid for the remaining of the year it is earned, plus the entire following year. Earn the pass now, and you’ll pretty much have the pass for close to two years since it will not expire until December 31, 2020. Last year, Chase put some limitations on the cards which means you can only have one Southwest personal card open at a given time. Unfortunately you can no longer apply for two personal cards to earn the pass. But, you can apply for one personal card and the business card, and that will give you 120,000 points — more than enough to earn the companion pass right away! You also do not have to fully hit the minimum spend on both cards to earn the pass. You’ll just have to spend $10,000 between the two cards to earn enough points for the pass.
Unfortunately, these cards are not available to those that have received a bonus within the past 24 months. However, if you applied for one card recently, you are still eligible to earn the bonus points for another card as they are separate products. Also, Southwest credit cards are subject to Chase’s “5/24” rule.
What are the sign up bonus points worth?
For those who are new to Southwest, 60,000 points is worth approximately $840 towards a future “Wanna Getaway” fare. The best is that you can use the points for a free flight and then also use your Companion Pass! That means two passengers are essentially flying for free while using the points earned from the credit card bonus!
Quick recap of the companion pass
The best part of the pass is that a companion is allowed to fly with you on ANY flight. As long as there is one seat available, you can book your companion a ticket. There are NO restrictions and NO blackout dates. Not only that, even if the main passenger is flying on a free ticket with points, you can still use the companion pass! So that means on your first few flights, you can use the sign up bonus points earned from the credit card PLUS a companion can fly with you. That is essentially doubling the value of the sign up bonus!
Some things to keep in mind:
- Once you accrue the necessary 110,000 points to earn the companion pass status, the pass will be available for you the entire year it was earned PLUS the entire following calendar year. So if you earn the pass now, your pass with be active all of 2019 and 2020.
- You cannot combine points between two accounts to count for the companion pass.
- Transferring Chase Ultimate Reward points OR hotel points to Southwest DO NOT count towards the companion pass
- Your companion can fly with you an UNLIMITED number of times during the life of the pass. You can change your companion 3 times per year.
- The only amount your companion pays is the tax which is $5.60 per one-way. International flights are more and depends on where you are flying to/from.
- You CAN use the companion pass when the main passenger is flying on a free ticket!
