Easier Way to Earn Southwest Companion Pass: 25% Bonus on Southwest Credit Card Spend

Southwest just launched an awesome promotion for those who have the Southwest credit card. Throughout this winter, between Dec. 1, 2019 and Feb. 29, 2020, you’ll earn a 25% bonus on all points earned from using your Southwest credit credit card — must earn a minimum of 15,000 points for the bonus to kick in and can earn a maximum of 25,000 bonus points. You can register for this promotion on your Southwest Rapid Rewards promotion page. Unfortunately though, this promotion is targeted.

Earn up to 25,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards bonus points

This promotion is a quick and easy way to earn the Southwest Companion Pass.

Anything that pops up in your Rapid Rewards account as “Credit Card” will count. For those who just applied for the Southwest credit cards, when those points post to your account, they might even be included in the bonus. The terms do state that they will not count, but when they are posted to your account they are clumped into all credit card spend for the month. So I am not sure if their system knows how to differentiate.

This includes the bonus points from the credit card offer, plus everyday spend.

That means if you grabbed an 80,000 point offer, you might be looking at an extra 20,000 points. Or, if you applied for one business and one personal card, you’ll could potentially max out the 25,000 bonus points right off the bat.

All bonus points count towards the Southwest Companion Pass

The absolute best part about this offer, is that all bonus points earned count towards the Southwest Companion Pass. This is huge as it makes earning the pass for 2020 and 2021 could much easier, especially with the new increased requirements.

Overall…

Typically withmost Southwest credit cards, you earn 2 points per dollar spent on Southwest purchases (as well as Rapid Rewards hotel and car rental partner purchases) and 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases. If you are eligible for this promotion, this means you’ll earn 2.5 points per dollar on Southwest purchases and then 1.25 points on everything else.

One thing to keep in mind with this offer is that the points must post to your account by Feb. 29, 2020. This means you MUST meet your minimum spend for your new credit card and any additional credit card by your February statement close date. Any purchases made after your February date will not post until your March statement closes and thus will be ineligible for the bonus points.

This is a great way to increase your Southwest account balance and earn the amazing Southwest Companion Pass. Unfortunately I was not targeted for this offer, but another family member was. This would be been a clutch promotion to see in my account as I try to secure my pass for 2020 and 2021.

Comments

  1. Needing to spend $10K on the card before the bonus takes effect (retroactively) makes it much less interesting to me.

  2. I was targeted, but according to the Terms and Conditions, bonus points for new credit signup does NOT count.

“Bonus points earned from Chase on a new credit card promotion will not be eligible for the 25% bonus.”

    • @Scott – I do wonder how it will actually play out in practice though. I wouldn’t be surprised if they do count. We shall see!
