While this has been known for a few months, it just dawned on me that I have yet to write about. Starwood and Delta have teamed up and you are now able to earn miles and points at the same time! However, before you get too excited, this is just for those with status.

So here is how it works:

Earn SPG points while flying Delta

  • If you have SPG Platinum or Gold status, you’ll earn 1 SPG point for every dollar spent on eligible Delta flights. So this means if you have a $400 Delta flight, you’ll earn 400 SPG points IN ADDITION to the Delta miles you are earning by flying.
  • If you have SPG Platinum status, when flying on Delta you’ll receive priority check-in, priority boarding, and your first checked bag will be free.

Earn Delta miles while staying at Starwood hotels

  • If you have Delta Diamond, Platinum, or Gold status, you’ll earn 1 mile for every dollar spent on eligible room rates at every Starwood hotel and resort globally. So if you have a $1,000 bill upon checking out of your Starwood hotel stay, you’ll earn 1,000 Delta miles IN ADDITION to the SPG points you are earning by staying at their hotel.
  • If you have Delta Diamond or Platinum status, when staying at Starwood hotels you’ll receive 4pm late checkout, access to the elite check-in line, complimentary in-room Internet, and an upgraded room (if available).

This is great for those who only have loyalty at Starwood or Delta, but still fly/sleep at the other from time to time. You can still reap the benefits of having status on both by only having to worry about maintaining one status level each year. Of course there are a few other benefits by having status at Delta and Starwood that you are still not getting (i.e., Starwood lounge access, Delta upgrades, etc.). But for a start, this is great! I personally have Starwood Platinum status, but hardly fly Delta. I now might be a little more inclined to fly Delta when needed. I do think the benefits are better though when you have Delta Diamond or Platinum status and staying at a Starwood hotel.

To receive the crossover benefits, you must first register. You can register either at www.spg.com/crossoverrewards or delta.com/crossoverrewards. It will take 48 hours for registration to fully take affect though, so you will not enjoy the benefits for 2 days. Also, bonus points/miles will take 4-6 weeks to post.

Enjoy those extra free points and miles!

Unfortunately, erroneous posting of SPG has been rampant according to FT and no one has any point of contact to correct the problems

A minor correction: all Delta Medallions earn miles for dollars spent on Starwood stays, not only Diamond, Platinum, and Gold.

I have already enjoyed a few extra points and miles (as an SPG Gold and Delta Silver). Not many, but definitely better than nothing 😉
