Earning 1,7000 Bonus Miles…

This is one of their more unique promotions as there are three different opportunities to earn bonus miles. You’ll also be awarded bonuses miles for online and in-store purchases!

  • Bonus 1: Earn 500 or 1,000 bonus miles — Spend $150 and earn 500 bonus miles; Spend $300 and earn 1,000 bonus miles (this is for in-store or online purchases and at ANY store through the portal)
  • Bonus 2: Earn 500 bonus miles — Spend $150 in-store at 60+ locations and earn another 500 bonus miles
  • Bonus 3: Earn 100 bonus miles — Spend $50 online at Macy’s and earn 100 bonus miles; Spend $50 online at Nike.com and earn another 100 bonus miles.

What’s interesting about this promotion is that it seems as though if you do your shopping in-store vs. online, a $150 purchase will satisfy both the first and second bonus mile requirement, automatically netting you 1,000 bonus points. Or, if you spend the full $300 online (or $150 online and $150 in-store), that will earn you 1,500 bonus points. Now, if either of those purchases happen to be at Macy’s or Nike, that will net you another 100 bonus miles per store. (For online purchases only).

Satisfy all three requirements and you can earn 1,700 bonus miles!

What is an online shopping portal?

For those not familiar with an online shopping portal, essentially you go through the shopping portal first (in this case United’s), search for your online merchant, and you’ll then be taken directly to that merchants online website. At that point, you’ll shop how you normally would as if you went to the merchants site to begin with. It takes an extra minute and allows you to earn points or miles on the way. The bonus described above is for cumulative spend and doesn’t need to be in a single transaction.

Now, for the in-store purchases, it requires you to link your credit card to your United MileagePlus account in advance.

For those who shop often, this is a great way to increase your United balance.
