As you probably already know, Marriott and Starwood both just recategorized many of their hotels a few days ago and while Monday was the last day to book some hotels at the lower rate, today is an opportunity to get points back for those select hotels that actually went down a category or two. Here is a list of all the hotels that changed categories Starwood and Marriott. If you have a hotel booked that is on the list, make sure to call Marriott or Starwood and re-book at the lower rate.

Popular Hotels That Went Down a Category

Starwood

  • The Westin Kuala Lumpur (decreased from a category 4 to 3)
  • The St. Regis Langkawi (decreased from a category 7 to 6)
  • Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Bangkok (decreased from a category 5 to 4)
  • Le Méridien Saigon (decreased from a category 4 to 3)
  • Sheraton Mendoza Hotel (decreased from a category 3 to 2)
  • Le Metropolitan, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, Paris (decreased from a category 6 to 5)
  • The Westin Palace, Milan (decreased from a category 6 to 5)
  • W Istanbul (decreased from a category 5 to 4) – almost all hotels are actually going down a category or two in Turkey
  • The Westin Copley Place, Boston (decreased from a category 6 to 5)
  • The Westin Riverwalk, San Antonio (decreased from a category 5 to 4)
  • The Park Central San Francisco (decreased from a category 6 to 5)
  • Sheraton Steamboat Resort Villas (decreased from a category 6 to 5)
  • W New Orleans – French Quarter (decreased from a category 6 to 5)

Marriott

  • Hutchinson Island Marriott Beach Resort & Marina (decreased from a category 7 to 6)

So if you already have a reservation booked for any of the above hotels, make sure to call Marriott/Starwood and get a refund on your points.

I have a Marriott reservation at a hotel that went up from cat 3 to 4 after I booked. my confirmation page says that i paid the cat 4 price, even though i didn’t. anyone out there ever cancelled their booking in such a situation? is there an arbitrage opportunity here?

You mentioned calling Hyatt to get a refund on points and then mention Hyatt Gold Passport. I think you need to revise the conclusion just a touch

Small correction on your post – you are asking to call Hyatt and get points back on SPG and Marriot stays :). Wouldn’t that be nice.

Why would I call Hyatt? And how did this save you Hyatt points?

Why did you call Hyatt to get a refund for Marriott and SPG ?

“So if you already have a reservation booked for any of the above hotels, make sure to call Hyatt and get a refund on your points. I personally had a reservation for a hotel that went from a category 6 to a category 4. It took just a few minutes and they canceled and rebooked my night. This saved me a ton Hyatt Gold Passport points!”

The topic was related to Marriott & SPG but I see you mentioned to call to Hyatt and Hyatt Passport points

A reminder that you should always re-check your hotel award reservations. Hotel categories change all the time… and not always for the worse. Sometimes you can save points by re-booking at the new lower price. Thanks for this.
