Price protection is an awesome credit card benefit that comes with many cards that you might already have in your wallet. Ultimately, if a price goes down after a certain number of days after making the purchase, you can file a claim with the credit card company and they’ll reimburse you the difference. While every bank has different terms on how this benefit work, it is a pretty great way to save some money!
Unfortunately though, Discover is ending this benefit TODAY, October 31, 2018. This means if you have previously made a purchase on your Discover card and you have found the item for less (from either the same merchant or a different merchant), make sure to file your claim today! You can submit a claim as long as you made the purchase within the past 90 days and you used your Discover card to pay for the entire purchase. With Discover you can be reimbursed up to $500 per item with a limit of up to $2,500 per year.
If you are looking to file a claim, you’ll need to call Discover customer service at 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-346-2683) to get the process started. You’ll need to submit the following documents:
- A completed and signed claim form
- Your Discover card statement showing the original purchase price
- The sales receipt for the item
- A copy of a dated, printed lower-price ad. And if the item doesn’t appear in an advertisement, you can submit a signed statement from a store manager on store stationery, documenting the lower price.
Assuming your claim is eligible for price protection, you’ll receive a check for the price difference within 15 days. You can learn more about Discover’s Price Protection benefit here.
Other Credit Cards that Offer Price Protection
While Discover will longer offer this great benefit, there are still three other banks that have similar policies (although unfortunately Discover had the best program of them all).
Citi has has a Price Rewind tracker which is a great tool to monitor price reductions. You simply enter your purchase into the tracker and they will automatically try to find a lower price for you. Although you can always submit a claim yourself as well. With this benefit, you can receive up to $200 back per item, up to $1,000 per year. Some credit cards that will give you this benefit include: Citi Thank You Preferred, Citi Double Cash Card, Citi Simplicity Card, etc.
Only Barclays World Elite Mastercards are eligible for their price protection benefit. With this benefit, you’ll have to manually submit a claim within 120 from the original purchase date. You can receive up to $250 back per item, up to $1,000 per year. Some credit cards that will give you this benefit include: AAdvantage Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard and Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite Mastercard.
There is only one card that qualifies for their Best Value Guarantee benefit — the U.S. Bank Cash 365 American Express Card. With this benefit, you can receive up to $250 back per item, up to $1,000 per year.
