I have been in the northern part of Thailand for the past 6 days and am loving it. I will detail out every little bit of my trip for you all upon my return, but wanted to give you a quick flavor of the past week.
The day we arrived we spent wandering around the city and tracking down a highly recommended tailor from Trip Advisor. My husband was able to get a great linen blazer, linen shorts, a shirt, and tie for $200. It was a fun experience for him to get these items custom made.
The next day we headed out for our 3 day/2 night trek which took us through the hill tribes and up to Chiang Rai. Chiang Rai is a mini Chiang Mai and a little more quaint. Chiang Mai was actually a bigger city than expected. Both cities have similar activities, but Chiang Mai is a little easier to get to from the southern beaches. During this trek we went to the border of Burma and actually entered a tiny island in Laos for a few minutes. This was a great part of our overall trip, however, I wish it was a little more active. We hiked for two hours the first day and an hour the next. There were a few bicycle tours that we saw that seemed fun as well.
After our trek, we headed back to Chiang Mai for the remaining three days. We spent an entire day at Patara Elephant Farm where you own an elephant for the day. This was by far the highlight of our trip thus far. I cannot emphasize how much I LOVED this day. My elephant, Lucky, was a 6-year old female and ha so much personality. In the morning we bathed our elephant and checked their health. Afterwards we rode our elephant bareback to a waterfall where we ate lunch. I held on for dear life, but it really was so much fun! The best part was then playing in the waterfall with the elephant. There are so many more details and pictures to come! I was very sad to leave Lucky, but know she is in great hands at Patara – they really take great care of their elephants.
Today we had a full day cooking class and ate enough for three days. The day included 6 courses and a visit to the local market. The instructor, Yui, runs the cooking school out of her home (A Taste of Thai). I would also highly recommend her cooking school as she is wonderful.
We have one free day tomorrow in Chiang Mai and then off to Bangkok!
